engine misfires Sign In

When a cylinder is misfiring on a car, can the misfire have degrees of misfireness? My misfire seens to be bad when at idle, but can barley tell there is a misfire when the engine reaches 1500-2000 rpms or runs at about 40-50 mph. Is this possible that the misfire is worse at idle then at higher rpms? If so why?

Indy, your trying to analyze this car to death. Your cylinder has no compression. The valve is burnt, end of story. You either continue to drive it this way or you fix it. The oil isn't going to change it, the additives aren't going to change it and it's not going away.

No I just like to learn as much as possible about my car. I like to learn things when I can and since I have this issue with this car and have questions, I just wanted to present them to people with a knowledge of cars and engines. If the misfire can be less when the engine is running at a higher rpm, then I would do my best to avoid as many stop lights and such on my travels and such.

Indy; There must be more history of this thread that I'm aware of? IF the cylinder has no compression, it doesn't matter if you are idling or going 100mph. It won't fire. You just don't notice it as much at higher engine speeds and less load than when idling or accelerating. All of the fuel going into that cylinder is going right out the tail pipe. If you have a catalytic converter, you will ruin it if not already. If it gets plugged up, and it will, you won't be going anywhere.

I know what it wrong, I am just trying to find ways to nurse the engine and cats for as long as possible. Today we lost my dad's car due to loss of transmission fluid so we are down to just this car and I am trying to do everything possible with as little cost as possible to keep the car running.

Indy, we have answered your questions numerous times and all the numerous different ways you keep asking. We are here to help out people and we are happy to do so but we cannot train you to be a mechanic. Your one problem has generated about a dozen long threads that are taking us away from other people that have other problems that we can actually solve. Please don't abuse our help. I have to agree with HT on this one..... I'm not trying to be mean but we have covered every possible scenario with this Taurus. I have seen all the other posts since about oil, coolant or whatever. You are looking for a silver bullet you aren't going to find..

I can sympathize with your situation but there are no procedures, maintenance schedules or quick fixes for running a car with a dead hole.........
