engine noise Sign In

2000 chevy express 3500 5.7 liter
the noise im getting is like a ticking almost a light knocking noise ive replace the main and rod bearing all within specs. and replaced all the lifters.
i have heard that they are bad for the pistons to slap around and that it will quieten down as the engine warms up.
however the the noise is constant could it be the pistons slapping around??? it started after a heater hose blew and overheated.. or is there something else that i should be on the look out for?

another thing is that its not as loud upon sstart up and gets louder as it warms up its got me completely confused

Re: engine noise - Piston Slap? Sign In

Three Vortec 5.7s in family and mine purchased used but no miles used to have some quick piston slap - the others don't?? It's gone now after some years of using synthetic oil and some research was told they used shorter piston skirts on at least some of them.

Not worried about that as any noise is gone in seconds. Owned a 69 Lincoln with a 460 at over 30 years and a million miles that did it new and dealer went nuts but never fixed that and it too would quit the noise in no time and I still see that car around.

You seem to understand and pay attention to noises of any kind as some will or could be deadly to an engine or whatevers and might have been easy if caught on time,

T

Re: engine noise - Piston Slap? Sign In

could it be the pistons slapping??? there is no metal shaving in the oil and doesnt seem to effect the power of the engine i mean idk i mostly work on stuff that 18 wheels and large 6 cylinder diesel but this is a new one to me ive not ever come across anything like this and thats about the only things that havent been replaced are the pistons. and if the pistons are the case some machine work would more than likely need to be done and i absoulty hate trying to take engins out of vans..

Re: engine noise - Piston Slap? Sign In

Since this seems to have started after an overheat there might be unseen damage or just sticky when cold till oil changing probably would clear up.

Real piston slap is pretty distinct. Tough engines and if oil pressure is up and fast when cold starting may just survive this. It only make the noise with any load but not in neutral and in that it goes away would manage this with synthetic oil as said for now unless you have more proof of real engine problems.

How hard did it overheat? Any sludge noted even at oil fill cap or something easy. I hear you with the vans and messing with some of them never mind getting a whole engine out!

Any chance you are being fooled with this noise by a crack or leak in anything exhaust many of which will tighten up once warm?

Off line for a while and here all the time day or night but could take a while now to get back to you,

Tom

Re: engine noise - Piston Slap? Sign In

no there is no confusing this noise from any other noise. just sounds like a piston or something is hitting something i dont know how to explain it

but thats about where im at on it is just to do a or well finish doing a complete rebuild on the engine
was hopeing someone else had some ideas on what it might be

i do have a catalog that has an adaptor where you can bolt it to the front of the engine not sure how it works but your supposed to be able to bolt this adaptor to the engine and use your hoist to remove the engine through the front of the van
