I have a 1984 mercedes benz 380sl with 144,000 miles on it and it was running pretty good and now all of a sudden i have a smoking problem at start up and idles rough after it should be warmed up. do you have any idea what would cause this problem. it acts like an older vehicle with a carb that the choke was sticking on. and it does not quit smoking after warm up it actually gets worse.

my grandfather 82 380sl who had a simular problem.. ended up being warm up regulator.. I have no idea how to test it though might have to do some research there. I do know there is a vacuum line on it I would check and make sure its not cracked or disconnected.

They use weird mechanical fuel injection system and the warm up regulator is used to control fuel pressure on start up.

I had the same problem with mine! if you have fuel injection as I have, it was one of the injectors. Black smoke is a sign of gas over load, you start it and it chugs along trying to get the gas overload out so it can smooth up. If you rev it up after you start it, does it clean up and run alright? After you drive it and park for a while does the same problem occur when you start it after its set for a while? If so, it is undoubtedly a leaky injector. If not fuel injection then a bad spark plug! The way that I checked mine if you don't have the equipment, which I don't, do this: Unhookall of your plug wires but leave them on the plugs so that they will fire, start your car and using a pair of pliers or anything anything that will grab on to the wire, wrap some tape around the handle as you could get a shock, lift a wire off and if the engine idles down, that injector or plug is good, replace the wire and continue doing the same thing with each wire until you may come to one that doesn't idle down, that will be the bad one. Whoops, I went back and reread your post and I see that it smokes even after warm up. So you may have more serious problem but you can still check it the way that I said to see what cylinders are miss firing!
