engine won't start after refueling Sign In

My mom's Hyundai Santa Fe (2004 I think) keeps not being able to start after getting gas at a gas station. It won't turn over; sounds like it doesn't have enough power, even though it seems fine every other time besides after fueling up. She says that adding a little bit of oil to the engine helps, but I don't think that's actually the problem. Any ideas based on this information alone?

There is also a high-pitched whirring noise when idling after start-up, like one of the belts needs replacing or something? These might be separate issues.

We're taking it to a mechanic soon but I thought I'd ask here first.

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas or just very low too often, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off which is what a fresh tank of gas does.
You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this

Check the evap purge valve for being stuck open. If the evap purge valve is stuck open, the fumes from the tank and charcoal canister get pushed into the engine during refueling. The fumes create an extremely rich condition and basically flood the engine causing no starts, hard start, and rough running until the engine clears out.

That would most likely set a code on something this new you would think..
He should have the car scanned for any codes.
I agree with you, I think it has something to do with the EVAP system.
