hey guys. hope u can help. i have a 2002 pontiac bonneville, 3.8 supercharged,150000 miles. last night while my daughter was driving home, the car just quit on her. total loss of power. this morniing i pulled out the alternator and battery and tested both. the alternator was good, battery was shot. i replaced the battery with a new one and reinstalled the alternator. the problem now is the car cranks but will not start. when i turn the key i do not hear the fuel pump turn on. i depressed the shrader valve on the fuel rail and there is no pressure. i had my wife then the key forward a few times while depressing the valve and have no pressure at all.i have checked the fuse for the pump and switched the relay for the pump with one of the other ones and it still will not turn on. i cant imagine that the pump just pooped out at the same time as the battery.any suggestions?

If you have a volt meter or test lamp you can check for power and ground at the pump electrical connector at the tank while cranking the engine. If you have power and ground and don't hear the pump, the pump is bad. The wire colors for the pump are grey and black. The connector should be near the right side of the tank. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

A quick backyard check would be to pound on the gas tank with something heavy that won't damage the tank.....If pounding on the tank while someone is cranking the engine gets it to start, then you more than likely have a bad fuel pump... I don't know when you tested the battery....If it was this morning, then something could have been left on that drained it overnight..... Footnote....If pounding on the tank gets it to start......The car is not fixed.....It is just started......for the moment

i tried banging on the tank with a 2x4 while my wife cranked and the car briefly started. not too excited about this as the pump cost 400 dollars. however, thanks for the idea.definitely something to remember.

im a little late on an update but thought i owed that to you fellows. the pump was indeed the problem. the amazing part about this is that the bonneville has an access plate in the trunk that gives easy access to the fuel pump. no need to drop the tank. this was awesome and took me less than an hour. just something for future reference for u guys. thanks again.

There are a few vehicles with access panels like that but most of them are Asian vehicles. There are a couple domestics like yours but we don't remember which ones they are. If we took the time to check our data base, it would tell us that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

It's fun pulling a fuel pump from the trunk in something like a Park Avenue and trying not to spill gas all over the trunk carpet. Customers don't like that too much. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
