Our 2000 Dodge Durango started making a terrible noise last week. It has 120,000 miles . The mechanic says it is fatal and he must put a "used" engine in the car at the cost of $3,000. Body is good, new tires, new battery but it is still an old car. Something aabout a rocker arm bad, one cylinder bad, and metal in the oil. Is this a reasonable solution or should we just scrap the car? Mechanic says he can warranty the engine for 12,000 miles which I find difficult to believe since there are so many other things that could go wrong?? I know nothing about cars and would appreciate some thoughts on this problem from those of you who do know cars. Thank you

We would have to see the whole diagnosis to make an accurate assessment. If the bad cylinder is due to a lower end problems and exactly what those problems are then the cheaper solution maybe a new/different engine.. You know the condition of the vehicle. It it's in good shape & this is the only problem with it, it may be worth fixing. Today $3000 would probably get you a used car that is likely going to need as much work as well...... If this is the biggest problem on a laundry list of other problems it may be a wise decision to be looking at something else............
