no spark from coil Sign In

have a 1989 ford f150 efi 302 engine.. been sittin for months went to start it no spark from coil.. did tests, have 12 volts to one side the other side test light stays on whole time cranking it over, it is suppose to go and and off but says lite whole time, repalced the tfi module still same result..it ran when i parked it.. was haveing some issues with it, was dying on me but would start after 20 minutes or so why i parked it now want to work on it and wont start at all no spark

Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light.

I'm going to make an educated guess and say it could be the pickup inside the distributor. Why? It ran for 20 mins, got hot and shut down and repeat. Typical sign of failing pickup or TFI. Also the TFI module will fire the coil at base ignition timing even if the ECA is disconnected just like a GM ignition bypass system would. The ECA is turning on the EEC relay because the coil has power. You could also do a bypass test with a 12 volt test light on the PIP circuit to cause the ECA to fire injectors and turn on the fuel pump.

Testing the hall effect pickup inside the distributor with the TFI connected is almost impossible cause you can't get to the connections. Changing the hall is a kind of a PIA cause you have to remove the pressed on gear to get the trigger wheel out of the way.

Why test for injector pulse? It doesn't have spark and he knows the TFI module isn't toggling the coil's ground with his test light. You know it isn't going to PIP.

Another trick on Fords is to watch the check engine light while cranking the engine. If the check engine light stays lit while cranking the engine, the ECA isn't getting PIP.

No we don't. We don't know if there is a wiring or connector issue with the ignition. Not having injector pulse would pretty much confirm that there is no reference signal and then point to the pick up coil. It's a lot easier than testing or replacing the the pick up.

If,if, if you do come up with needing a pick up coil they are a total PITA to get thrust thing held by roll pin out and off of dist shaft. Try first if so but plan on another distributor.


Other: Check connections at the relays. Should be underhood under a plastic shield. They don't like wet or time relays or connections,
