oil capacity - 1981 Toyota Corolla Sign In

Does putting more than the recommended amount of oil into the car cause any harm?

After my mechanic does an oil/filter change, the oil level is quite a bit above the "max" mark on the dip stick.

The repair manual for my 1981 Toyota Corolla says 4.0 quarts with filter change, and 3.5 quarts without filter change.

How much too much? Out of date if reading do oil filter every other time. Do it each oil change and use the 4 quarts and still check it,

If it is overfull, just drain a little bit or suck it out using a fluid extractor. If it is way over full, the crank will be churning the oil and creating aeration which the oil pump can pickup. If enough air gets into the pump and it cavitates, it can cause unsteady oil pressure which results in mechanical damage.

I don't know how you define "quite a bit". If the oil is 1/4" inch above the mark I wouldn't worry about it. Any more than that and it should be drained.

Tom,

It was over the "max" mark on the dipstick by about 1/4 of the distance between "max" and "min".

I just checked the invoices, and it was just 4 quarts, which was correct with the filter change, according to the big thick repair manual. However, the little glove-compartment manual gives lower amounts--like maybe 3.5 to 3.7 with filter change. (I don't have that with me now.)

Discretesignals,

Thanks so much for the suggestion to suck out the oil. Wish I had thought of that myself. (I'm not able to drain it.)

It's good you are paying attention. 1/4 Inch doesn't really mean 1/4 of the 1 quart high or low marks as you don't know the shape of the oil pan. Do know that means level ground, engine off for several minutes or better overnight.

Know this: Engines - in general have to tolerate a range lower and higher that exact to compensate for slopes, hills, the speed of the engine there's oil suspended thru the system not in the pan while dripping back down and must maintain oil in pan for continuous supply.

Manual says 3.5 to 3.7. Look if that meant Liters. IMO most would put in 4 quart bottles is that was stated. Many shops would be using oil from a drum to container or one that counts out how much it dispensed NOT the bottles you see out there for sale.

Congrats on even having a 1981 still working for you so you are doing something right,

Tom

As I said, I think my solution is to suck out the excess with a fluid extractor, as Discretesignals suggested.

Is this like a turkey baster--a long rigid plastic tube with a rubber bulb on one end? Or is it something more specialized for this task?
