ok i have a 92 dodge stealth rt 3000 v6 dohc that i just took in on a trade and im having problems lining up alignment dots on the two front pullys, ill turn them over about 3/4 of a full rotation and they wont go any further, any help please

That's probably because the pistons are hitting the valves. I hope you didn't force it. You have to manually move the crankshaft a little until the cam frees up. This is from the service manual
- Align timing marks for camshaft sprockets on the front bank, as follows:
- Install the crankshaft pulley. Shift timing mark on crankshaft sprocket by three teeth to lower piston in No. 1 cylinder slightly from top dead center. Turning camshaft sprocket with piston in No. 1 cylinder located at TDC may cause valves to interfere with piston.
- Make sure that timing marks on camshaft sprockets for intake and exhaust valves are not within range marked A, Fig. 45. If timing mark is within range marked A, turn camshaft sprocket to move timing mark to area closest to range marked A. In range marked A, the cam lobe on the camshaft lifts the valve through the rocker arm and the camshaft sprocket is apt to rotate by reaction force of the valve spring.
- Turn camshaft sprocket to locate timing mark as shown in Fig. 46. If the intake and exhaust valves of the same cylinder lift simultaneously, interference with each other may result. Therefore, turn the intake camshaft sprocket and the exhaust camshaft sprocket alternately.
- Turn camshaft sprocket clockwise to align the timing marks. If camshaft sprocket has been turned excessively, turn sprocket counterclockwise to align timing marks.
- Align timing mark of the crankshaft sprocket. Shift timing mark of crankshaft sprocket one tooth in counterclockwise direction to install timing belt.

i didnt force it thats why i got on here and asked someone what to do.....how do i free the cam?

oh oh. you don't know how to move the crankshaft and your doing a timing belt on a 3.0L DOHC engine? Oh lordy. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

If you look in the driver's side wheel well there should be a plug or hole. If you look in the hole you'll see the crankshaft bolt. If I remember you can stick a 1/2 extension in there to turn the crank. Make sure all your spark plugs are out, so it is easier to turn. Once you get all your marks lined up, belt installed, and properly tensioned. Rotate the crank by hand 2 revolutions. Make sure you don't have any binding and that your marks are lined up correctly when you get back to TDC on compression. Run a compression check on it before you try to start it. Got a feeling that it probably has bent valves. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I think so too. The SOHC 3.0 was freewheeling but not so on the DOHC.

I first started out working at GM/Mitsubishi dealer. I don't know how many GT3000s and VR4s I saw that came in on tow truck on the Mits side because someone "tried" to do a timing belt. The worst I saw was someone tried to do head gaskets on one and got the camshafts swapped. There is no room for error on the DOHCs. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Follow HT's advise to the letter. There is absolutly NO room for error . What errks me is that the lab coats designing these bombs are making 6 + digit salaries . Maintenance is a after thought . Volvo and lincoln/ford each have a multi cam engines with no timing index marks at all. You have to degree each cam in relation to each other and the crank. Ford has a $700 kit to do this. SHEESH LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
