what rear main seal does a 1991 chevy truck, 2 whl drv, 283l engine have? can i drop the pan and change it or is it the harder option of the two?

That would be a very big "depends..... There's no 283 in that year or any year for a long long time, so if it's just a typo then you have a 1 piece seal & the trans will have to come out to replace it.... If by chance, somehow a 283 did find it's way into your truck (and this didn't happen in Detroit, unless it was a backyard in Detroit) then you have a 2 piece seal & will have to drop the pan & remove the rear main bearing cap to change it......... HTH
