salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

So car info first:

2009 Pontiac vibe 2.4l base model 170 thousandish miles

Bought this car for my son (his first) I forgot to remind him that they need oil he ran it dry.

Time for a new engine!

So I have bought a replacement from a salvage yard donor vehicle was a 09 vibe that had a rear end collision 115,00 miles.
This is the first engine swap I've ever attempted.
I'm not happy with the results of the leak down test I've performed.
#1 25% loss out the exhaust valve
#2 40 % loss out cyl #1 and some out exhaust valve
#3 35% loss out exhaust valve
#4 30% loss out exhaust valve and a little out cylinder #2

This engine was out of vehicle for some time and tested better after i turned it over with air applied and then better yet after I added a little oil to each cylinder ( the above #s)

engine is at TDC during test

I didn't know what a leak down test was two weeks ago but I'm fairly confident that I'm performing it correctly

The engine has a 30 day warranty

Does this sound bad or is there other tests I should run to determine the health of the engine

any advise is appreciated thanks

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

Quick read sorry:
First if it's running now at all let it run longer and use it if you can. Why - let it try to "break-in" (old style motors) like those. It might snap out of it and be OK vs another try unless fresher and if possible document everything if OK and ask for a reduction in cost or wait for a better one.
IDK how every salvage place deals with motors they pull. Many would be tested as best as possible, info and VIN from donor and brought indoors such that they ship to another or anywhere if a match. Shouldn't decline once take out but you said it was allowed to - bummer.
***************
Second if not running why did you quit yet? Understood you trying just that test IDK how it can be so valid on any engine that's not been run for even some time. Go get it running the slightest problems may disappear in seconds or a short time of use.

Last for now: If it runs and gets better make sure all the things you should have done to this if yours since new are done or do them if car overall seems like there's more life in it.

Just a question for the last-last? Just how do you or son (you said that) allow an engine to run low on oil? NO. You check it yourself don't be trusting some gadget control to list out all it's troubles on the dash as a new or newer car somewhat does.

Good luck,

T

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

Tom
thanks for the reply. the engine is just on the stand I haven't put it in the car yet so I haven't had it running. from what I under stand the valves might not seat if a little dust or rust has set in and might disappear once running I guess I'm most concerned on the cylinder to cylinder leakage .just would hate to install it and it not be good.

Yes I feel I failed as a father not checking on the car. As I now understand these engines are known oil burners.

I don't understand why you are trying to do a leakdown test on a junkyard engine to start with.

In over 50 years in this business I have never heard of anyone doing a leakdown test on a junkyard engine.

You won't get an accurate test from an engine that has just been sitting around and even if you could it wouldn't tell you a thing about oil consumption.

That test is commonly used to check for bent valves after a timing belt failure on an interference engine.

If you have never done this before you can get yourself in a world of expensive trouble.

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

I was hopping to find out if it had valve trouble, warn rings, bad head gasket, cracked head wasn't testing for oil consumption.
I guess I'm looking for advise on what you would check

Short of starting and running the engine, you can't do more than a visual inspection.

Remove the oil pan and valve covers and look for any sludge buildup or rust sludge in the cooling system.
Replace the belts and hoses and the water pump and thermostat, plugs and any hard to reach coils before the engine is installed.

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

I'll add this.
Not sure what type of salvage yard you purchased this engine from.
If it was a u pull, then this won't apply
But if it was a salvage yard that pulls the engines, check with them as to how the handle the warranty on engines and transmissions.
The Salvage/junk yards I usually deal with Will tow the car to their assigned garage or yard and pull the engine and replace the bad engine, instead of sending you another for you to install.
I worked in a certain Chevy dealer, that sold a ton of used cars, and we installed many used engines and transmissions. Naturally, we would get a failed one, When that happened they did the pull and reinstall.
Down side to that, the garages or yards they had do them sometimes did a piss poor job of installing the replacement engine.
We had to always look them over afterwards .
But anyway, see if the yard offers that, if not, its a roll of the dice.

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

Just thinking back here, reminded of a story.

Many years ago, back in the late 70's, One of the Tow trucks blew an engine. What a surprise, drivers used to beat the crap out of 'em.

Anyway, called the salvage yard, Best one in Indiana, Served all of Chicagoland. Had the best Parts, Warranty, Stock, etc.

Sent me out an engine, Had to swap out intakes anyway , removed intake , clean as a whistle inside.
Resealed it, installed it, fired it up and it rapped loud, bottom end.

P/o'ed because its a lot of work , removed engine, had them send me out another, took off intake and Oil pan, lots of sludge buildup.

Boss said install it.
OK, installed it, Ran like a dream, not a bit of problems with it. For all I know that SOB is still running somewhere.
Who da thunk it. If I was a betting man, I would've bet against it.
So you never know.....

Hey DJ, I don't know where you find these yards that replace bad engines for you. I'm yet to see one of those around these parts.
The best you can hope for around here is they will give you another one. At this point LKQ has bought up about every yard around anyway.

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

Guessing because we bought so many maybe
There are still a couple who will.

Of course there are rules, You have to reseal them, replace timing belts and such, tune , ,etc. If you play be the rules.....

LKQ bought up a lot around here too, Even couple u pulls.
LKQ has good warranties, standard 6 months 6k miles, you can also Purchase 6 mo,12mo or 24 mo parts and labor

I havent bought a used engine in a while. i'll have to check to see if the 2 yards still offer what i mentioned.

One yard did, , bought out by LKQ, so not anymore without purchasing additional.
But thats what I was referring to, they wouldn't pay us for the labor, they'd rather do it themselves.

Hey Chicago is a big deal, this isn't some small town in anywhere USA...LOL

Yeah but you can only find the car 6 months out of the year up there.

We use junkyard cars to tie our gators up to.

Re: salvage yard engine ????? Sign In

Can't top that

Got some unsavory characters in our junkyards ,some bad enough that they think they could take on a gator, That sure would solve some of the problems here.
Send up some Gators

We actually had one in a lagoon on the loose. Chicago hired a guy from Florida to come catch him
