Who is doing all this work cookie? A 5.0 of the age a pick up coil is a pest. What is the compression not just say ''good'' and what is the timing. I think 10 degrees BTC is the setting but should be listed underhood if you can still read the sticker. Like anything of the age vacuum controlled anything and hoses everywhere are suspect. Even the grommet where PCV goes in way down in back and hose to vacuum brake booster. These should be counter rotating "302s" for trucks but basically the same as ones for cars. Test for codes as Hammer said. I forget which two ports you jump as I have the code reader for these - like was $20 or so and just count blinks underhood at connector. If original timing chain it's highly suspect! You didn't want to hear that, T

If you have a voltmeter, check the EEC relay for a voltage drop......That powers a lot stuff & I've had a few of those cause some problems before.... It should be under the dash by the comp..... Just a quick thought....

Right on Sid. It's the relay underhood with the brown skirting. I carry a spare. You know I haven't evolved out of this vintage yet LOL, Tom

Jeez - I'm done with this crap so need another like two butts You can fit several sheets of plywood and a 1/2 dozen bodies in the trunk of those suckers and still close the lid and get 25 MPG. Gutless wonders though. What the heck went wrong with the world? LMAO -- Tom

Not sure how you guys are coming up with EEC relay here.
motor acts like its loading up with fuel or starving for air,
now its like its flooding out
yes, new fuel pump, new high pressure pump, compression good, leak down ok, You can't have fuel without an EEC relay. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

There are physical points inside so can partially fail with odd behaviour. That's why you can whack one and sometimes they will snap to for a while. Been there done that -- T

They were also known for the computer/pump ground connector near the battery corroding up and causing wacky problems too. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The EEC relay powers the fuel pump relay. You don't get fuel without the EEC relay.

Doesn't matter as they can go weak and still run. Much like lousy ignition points. The origs are such that you can't swap them around because of the skirt. The aftermarket will fit in any but so far I find they don't last well. Note no bump that makes the generic fit all. Newer frauds you can swap out one to another but not this vintage if original stuff. Note to any readers. The bail that holds these gets PUSHED to release be at a glance looks like you would PULL. Says PU-SH on the two sides of the retaining bail. Not sure but OE Ford part isn't that expensive if available at all now. Not really worth the trip for many -- Tom

The ones I ran into were so long ago I don't really remember all the specifics......The main one, the OPs post brought back bad memories....He didn't post much but it sounded like the F150 that ate my lunch....Similar symptoms.....It ran like total crap, barely driveable but the only difference it some times it would run great... The EEC relay was working but had a voltage drop that was causing the problem, it powers a lot of stuff......DS brought some good points on the grounds to.... There really wasn't much info post to begin with so odds are we'll never know....
