ok here we go guys .son has a 94 ford escort 1.9 wagon P.O.S.
i replaced ignition switch a few months ago no problems.
earlier this week i went to move his car and starter would not stop when car was running.
it draned the battery that night , we charged the battery and starter kept enegageing when i switched gears,park,drive and rev
i let it sit for a few days ,no time to look at it.got the car started moved it by garage where my tools are at to take better look at it
i charged battery and starter did it again .so i took a hammer and tapped yes lightly tapped on starter ,now it wont start at all with key but i can jump the termanals at back of starter and get starter to work.relay on firewall is all i hear clicking now .

You probably hit the solenoid part of the starter and killed it. It sounds like you original problem could have been a bad neutral switch but that would have to be tested to be sure. Try jumping power directly to the small terminal of the starter and see if it still works and disengages when the wire is removed.

i didnt kill any thing like i said in frist post i can jump it and get started to work!
to prove it i just went out into the cold dark night and jumped it again to make sure i was not dreaming.
but now you have me wondering about this nutral switch ??

fixer; It's very rare, but I've run into it a few times; If the battery is bad, even though it is fully charged, may not have enough cranking amps left to pull the starter drive back out. Or, flywheel/starter drive teeth are damage and the drive is 'hanging up'. Have the battery load tested, check connections, ect. If all else fails, pull the starter and examine the drive gear and the flywheel/flex-plate teeth.

It could also be that ignition switch. If putting it into drive or reverse stops it, that would point to the ignition switch.

ok i'll check the battery out and have it tested. but tell me more about this neutal switch? and btw when i jumped starter it sounded good and a had a good cranking sound but this is when i jumped it,and god i hope it's not the ignition swicth it's new and costed me about 90.00$ the kids still owes me.
and as to when the car was running and the starterwas running at the same time u could hear what i would say was the teeth of the starterslipping off or enegageing the flywheel this is just a guess

I would bet the ignition switch is cheaper that the range sensor(neutral switch).
It's at the transmission shift lever
