Re: starter engages automatically while engine is running Sign In

The first question I have to ask is Do you have a remote starter installed on this vehicle? If you do, remove the remote starter relay and see if the problem goes away. If you don't have one installed, then we have to see if the starter is worn out and the gear is not being returned all the way or if we have a faulty electrical signal to the solenoid causing the starter to engage.
The possibilities are: bad starter, faulty ignition switch, intermittent short to voltage, faulty starter enable relay.
A quick check is to see if this only happens with the engine idling in park or neutral. When trans. is shifted into drive the problem stops, the neutral safety switch interrupts the crank signal off of the ignition switch so the problem is on the ignition switch side of the safety switch. If this happens even in drive, it is either a short on the starter side of the safety switch or it is a mechanical (starter) problem. There is a starter enable relay in the underhood fuse/relay block also. This is wired after the neutral safety switch. If this relay is tired, the spring that holds the contacts open could be weak and the internal switch could be bouncing around inside the relay causing intermittent starter engagement also. You could remove the relay after you start the vehicle to see if the problem clears up. You will have to reinstall it or your vehicle will not crank over. I know it sounds like a lot of work and confusion, but that's what it takes to avoid replacing good parts. One step at a time and we'll get it. Keep in touch.
