starter "one click" only sound it makes??? Sign In

HI, my car's starter has a click when the ignition key is turned, but the engine doesn't crank. It started after about 3 times. Then 2 days later, it's taking about 6 times of trying with the click noise, then the engine cranks. It seems hit and miss. Now its worsened. Not starting in about 12 tries. I checked and cleaned the battery terminals. My friend checked battery at 12.7v. Auto store said I could get a universal contact switch replacement kit to save money on not getting a rebuilt starter. acura 92 integra manual trans 1.8l Does this sound like a starter... solenoid... battery... wiring... "contact switch??" problem? The auto store person says that the denso starter rarely goes bad, just the contact switches. bUT he's not a mechanic. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks all!

Test for power arriving on the small wire at the starter when the key is held in "start" position. If you have power, the starter is likely bad assuming all the battery connections are good and the battery is good.

Hi, I will borrow my friends volt meter to do so. Question: if the starter is bad, what do you think of the auto store person's recommendation of getting a "universal contact switch replacement kit" to fix the starter instead of getting a rebuilt (which costs a lot more)? thank you

hello, i had a starter problem with my car also where it would deliver just one strong click when i turned the key. sometimes it'd start right away, sometimes not, eventually it wouldn't start at all and just clicked.

i solved the problem by replacing the starter with a rebuilt one, don't remember how much it cost but it wasnt more than 90 dollars as i did the work myself.

previously, i'd been given advice to build a relay bypass to send 12 volts directly to the starter, and also to try giving the starter a good old fashioned hit with something hard to possibly free up the stuck internals. i'd only try these as kind of desperation attempts to avoid the real problem which is needing a new starter.
