taurus idled up too far

why is my 2001 ford taurus all of a sudden idled to 1,000 rpm even when sitting still and idling? my check engine light was coming on from time to time and that last time I took it to my mechanic, he got it go off claiming there was no problem that he could see, I figure he probably just unhooked my battery, right? and now the idle is a little high, any suggestions would be much appriciated, thanks for your time.
