truck won't start
I got a 1989 Jimmy s15 4.3. It was clicking this morning and i put a new battery on it off my other truck that had a new battery on it. I put that battery on that other truck and it started the other truck fine. So, the battery is not the problem. I finally got it going after it clicked a few times and I drove it to autozone. I wanted them to check the starter and the alternato. They had me shut if off. then when they had me start it the same thing happened and it started clicking. They said the diagnostic machine said the starter failed. I finally got it started after it clicked a few more times and took it home After I got home I pulled the starter and took it back to autozone and they put it on their diagnosic machine and it passed. I checked the battery cables before I switched out the batteries and they are not corroded. I brushed them off anyway with a wire brush and put some red protector spray on them. I guess I need to take the starter to a shop that actually repairs starters and let them look at it. Maybe they can tell me what the intermittent problem is and fix it. I am guessing it is a solenoid problem. I have had problems before but in the past when the solenoid quit working it was not intermittant. Anybody got any ideas.

You can't reliably test a starter when it's out of the car. It needs to have a load on it to duplicate the conditions of the failure. The proper way to test this is to do a voltage drop test on the power and ground cables. Here is a video explaining that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paw80mS_Kxg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

guess I need to go back to autozone and ask him if the diagnostic tester that said the starter had failed said it failed because it had failed a voltage drop test. I suspect it did. I'm going to just assume the stater is the problem and the cables are ok. If I put new cables on it and put the starter back to autozone to have them test it again the chances of it clicking again when they test it are not guranteed. It may pass and start clicking as soon as I get home. Sometimes it does start ok. If it fails then I will be in trouble if I can't get it started and have to call a tow truck. I will call up the starter generator repair shop and ask them if they can test it under load. If they can I will just take them the starter and let them see if it will fail. They may tell me they can't test it under load either and tell me that they need to go through it and I also need to put new cables on it too. That is what I expect them to tell me. Letting the starter repair shop go through it will be cheaper than getting a new starter. It may just need a new solenoid. They have been repairing starter since 1950. That is all they do. Thanks for the advice. I am not a pro and your insight makes this a lot easier. If you want to make any other suggestions they would be appreciated.

You're not listening. The system has to be tested IN THE CAR to be able to tell anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

you are the one not listening. I cleared typed for you to read that I had it checked IN THE CAR at autozone. The tech at autozone did not tell me why his machine said the starter failed. I am not a professioonal. I had no idea that his machine had done some kind of diagnositic test. After learning what you have told me his diagnositc machine may have failed it because it failed a voltage drop. I don't know. I will have to ask him. If so then the starter is probably bad or I may need new cables. I will just buy a new starter and I will stop trying to ask any more questions. I was just asking for help not giving you persmission to insult me. Kinda sucks being told you are not listening doesn't it. Think about that before you type it again and insult someone else who like me is up to their ears in car problems just looking for a little help.

And again you are not listening.................... There are no techs at Autozone Autozone can't diagnose this problem. The tests they are running won't tell you anything and believe me, they didn't do a voltage drop test. I guarantee no one there has a clue what a voltage drop test is. The entire circuit has to be tested to determine where the voltage is being lost. If you want to buy a starter, go right ahead. If it doesn't work, maybe then you will listen and do some testing.
