vct solenoid Sign In

got a 1999 ford f150 4.6l when it warms up at idle it starts missing out to the point I think it is going to die. give it gas and it smooths out. it has 170,000 mile. I was told it was the vct solenoid but was wondering if my year even has them or could something else cause it to idle rough

Re: vct solenoid Sign In

That should have a code or code pending instead of guessing. Still doesn't mean the solenoid just that circuit. Double check that this 4.6 even has one?

Re: vct solenoid Sign In

Who told you the VCT solenoid was the culprit? Your Ford 2v 4.6L doesn't have variable cam timing. VCT for the F series pickups wasn't available on the 4.6L until 2009.

Re: vct solenoid Sign In

Couldn't find one for it DS so questioned that.

OP - Most of these engines at least earlier ones has full attitude with the long spark plug boot going down thru valve cover and sealing properly. Spark would jump out of unseen boot to ground and that plug not fire. Once just pulled out you could see evidence of spark tracing on some.

If you cancelled each one at a time you could find the one quickly if that. IDK, then was tossing for a whole quality set and would keep a working long one for the next same complaint till new set could be done - that common. New sets never did that again?

BTW - about any V8 will smooth out even with one cyl. down at higher RPM means little.

Tell tale was feeling exhaust exiting or hearing tailpipe with a single putt, putt no random even before opening a hood,
