water pump leaking?

Recently my friends was stolen. She got it back and while driving home the engine began making noises possibly from underneath the car. It died within a few minutes black smoke coming from engine(valve cover?). On inspection I noticed there was no water in the radiator.I filled it up but there was l pretty good flow of water leaking by the engine belts..IS it possible that this is the water pump? She said no lights came on indicating car was over heating. but How can one drive with out water and what are the results? Someone also said that its possible that it could be a timing belt/chain. If that breaks will that cause the water pump or engine to leak? This is a 1989 Mazda lx with turbo engine.

TMK leak can only be the pump or hose problem - must be fixed and change the oil soon! Cars don't like overheating - also check out the warning system - usually near thermostat. Sorry all that happened, try to have a good weekend,
