96 Toyota Corolla Front Tail Pipe Sign In

1996 Toyota Corolla DX 1.8L Engine; approx 152k mileage; no check engine lights; all 7 passing codes on OBD II
Exhaust Pipe has a leak: with car on lift & rag in tailpipe, mechanic & I found smoke & air leaking out of break where flex pipe joins solid pipe for front pipe (at rear of flex pipe). Mechanic did not find any other exhaust leak. 2 estimates to replace the flex pipe or to replace entire front pipe of exhaust system were $452 & $495. The nuts & bolts where 2 pipes connect just in front of catalytic converter are seriously rusted & I'm guessing will need to be cut off or torched off to replace front pipe.
Mechanic said a less expensive suggestion is to ask mufflers/exhaust repair shop if they could weld area where it cracked from flex pipe to solid pipe on front exhaust pipe. Do you think this would hold up to the vibration, etc?
Any other options that would do a good job of repairing leak for less than $452? Thank you

This should be right up the alley of a good exhaust specialty shop if you wish to cut the bad connector off and weld in a new one - common on that type and those type cars with some age. Best is to toss the whole pipe and by nature the most costly.

Front pipes frequently will have the flex area, converter and port for O2 sensors so cost more and more important. It will still need to be looked at as to what is going to last at least some reasonable time,

Exhaust shops replace those all the time. They should be able to weld in a new flex for under $100.

Thanks for your response. Sad to say no quotes in this area even come close to $100 to cut & weld a new flex pipe.

How long is a cut & weld job on a universal flex pipe going to last? Trying to weigh that against cost of replacing entire front pipe?

It will last just as long as the original. It's the same stuff. My shop has done many of them. You must have a cheap custom exhaust shop out there somewhere.

thanks for your feedback. i checked a number of exhaust shops in this area & nobody is near $100 estimate, including national muffler chain shops...i can't figure out why it's so expensive here to cut & weld a flex pipe onto the front pipe

Just checked - whole pipe new is under $200 to get your self. Shops markup some plus some gaskets but looks easy as things go..........

Re: 96 Toyota Corolla Front Tail Pipe Sign In

Thanks Tom. Yes I saw front pipe was pretty reasonable at one of the large online mail order houses for $95, plus cost of 2 gaskets & 2 nuts & bolts.

However the nuts & bolts just above the catalytic converter are corroded & will likely have to be cut off---something i doubt I could do. Also concerned if i would not have a clean removal of pipe at this joint with corroded nuts & bolts cause i can't afford to have to replace catalytic converter over a botched job.

Re: 96 Toyota Corolla Front Tail Pipe Sign In

Saw one for $112. True - don't forget all the nuts, bolts, gaskets - prices vary on that stuff too. I don't usually save those but just cut them off for new, if a real keeper spend a ton for stainless and never fight with them again.

I haven't gone much on-line for anything as if it doesn't fit right or anything wrong I just do not want to ship stuff back. I can't see much benefit in fixing the old one at the prices I saw ready to bolt on. Hammer Time's price guess was right on target IMO,
