I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L with 200K miles on it. The previous owner must have removed the two mini-cats right under the exhaust manifold. There are O2 sensors above and below where the mini-cats should be. It also has a larger catalytic convertor back in front of the muffler which is in place. Last week I got a check engine light. Did not affect performance. The garage said the codes were PO420 and PO432. They did a back pressure test on the exhaust and said there was "low restriction" which sounds good. They cleared the codes and said drive it to see if the light comes on again. My questions are how does this affect the performance of the jeep and can any damage be done by not having these mini-cats in the system? Does it affect gas mileage? Does it affect idling? I hate to spend $500 to get new mini-cats installed but will if necessary.

Model year 2001 and older too the converters are designed into the vehicle are NOT to mess you up. A good one wouldn't have any harmful restriction either.

All legalities aside put them back as OE designed it will run better IMO the "Mopars" (Chrysler Motors) was paying attention to just the sound of exhaust if nothing else.

There should be follow-up sensor(s) too that prove it was working will NOT change performance.

Just BTW - $500 for really well done exhaust and OE grade converter(s) if so isn't that much in the course of things can blow that in seconds on other issues too,
