EGR Valve 96 Buick Regal

I have a 1996 Buick Regal Custom 3100 that I've been driving for a few years as a "no car payment" car. The check engine light has always been off and on, the code pointing to EGR insufficient flow. I've been in the bad habit of getting it cleaned right before I get an emissions test to clear the light. But it always comes back on within a day or two. I'm finally buying a newer truck, looking to sell the Buick. Do you think buying a new EGR valve and slapping it on would fix the problem buy-and-large? I know there are other issues like the lines in and out, etc. But for $90 off the shelf, it would be worth it to just try and change it out instead of going through a shop. I've taken my old one off to try to clean it, so I'm fairly sure I could change it out. Any thoughts are appreciated Matt

You probably have a clogged EGR passage in the intake manifold between the EGR valve and the inside of the intake manifold. That is a pretty common problem on those. Best way to clean it is to remove the throttle body and EGR valve. Then clean the passage out with a coat hanger and carb cleaner. Rifle brushes work too. Replace the EGR gasket and throttle body gasket, clear the codes, and see what happens. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
