came home today and it was lying in the driveway. i looked up the numbers on it (D-182-53 the rest of the numbers didnt get me anywhere) and it seems like it's from the catalytic converter? safe to drive til i get it fixed? easy to fix, perhaps on my own? thank you for any help!

That's a heat shield and there because it is important for just that, shielding high heat from car or things under it. Common issue and save it AND don't lose the top 1/2 of it.

Assorted approaches if intact except for the spot welds. Best is whole pipe new and nasty expensive. Next is new heat shield (ask around for availability) spot welded on new or re-weld that one. It can be put back and stay in place with other methods as well best decided by a tech good at this and especially exhaust repair shops.

Stainless steel worm clamps (sizes for like dryer vents) can hold it exactly in place indefinitely also.

Doing nothing ranges from increased fire hazard (dry grasses and brush) to little impact. I'd put it back on anyway and can't advise on exact risks of ignoring it. If missing the other 1/2 back to asking a shop.

These make noise long before they do this and you should have paid attention earlier IMO it might have been easier to deal with,

There's no rule they have to make noise but usually so annoying you'd check it out. Do try to save both halves of that shield. At the glance it could be fixed up easily.

You may hear that you need a whole pipe that includes converter at wild bucks. 99.9 % even now (not working on stuff anymore) I still do this stuff and actually have best luck - looooong fix with those "worm" type hose clamps just larger ones or you can put a couple smaller ones end to end around the whole thing snugly and hold it right in place.

VERY, VERY common to me and those shields are on assorted hot exhaust parts and fail long before the pipes and parts themselves - universally not very well made new and just rust at the spot welds - the rest is still good.

Good luck either DIYing it or proper help.

Sorry to beat on this but using worm clamps if doable IMO isn't that "hack" of a fix. I've fixed zillions that lasted longer that way then the new one did!
Pic of them.............

Pic may expire or not show. Some say "Stainless" some marked just "SS" on them. Same brands of them do go end to end as needed, stainless just rusts lots slower.

BTW - assorted names for them. Just ask for hose clamps and that's what most would think of,

That's the shield for the exhaust manifold. You aren't going to hose clamp that back on. I'm sure the bolt holes have rusted away but you may be able to use some large flat washers if the bolts aren't seized.

Pic off my screen now. Whatever best works. Speak for myself, too many are fixable vs whole new items. Note that spot welding (new) ruins the rustproofing where they let go in the first place of such things so the rest is usually good!

Well if we can figure out where the thing is then maybe my guy can weld it back on, or somehow use hose clamps...this is from UNDER the car, not through the top? Thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it!!

Finding where it's missing should be the easy part. Let you "guy" choose with it right in front of him the best choice should be clear. Said those spot welds are where most give out and other whole thing is still OK just how to re-attach to get the most time out of it that's all.

My issue is that many of these things the actual exhaust parts are still just fine and hear of wild costs of just replacing entire exhaust systems IMO unnecessary for most,

No, it's through the top. When you open the hood, the exhaust manifold is right in front of you and that should be covering it.
