what kind of oil is recommended for cars over 100,000 miles i have 3.4 01 impala w/123,000 miles

I personally would just stay with the manufacturers recommendations...
Read your owners manual and/or underhood label ,maybe on oil fill cap as well.
Rule to thumb...
5W30 for temps from below zero and above
10W30 for temps zero and above..
They do make those higher mileage engine oils..I don't know how much they'll help you for the money they cost.
I would just keep it changed on a regular basis and install manufacturers recommended oil (viscosity) and use a quality name branded oil.
See what the others say..

as jim mentioned, stay with what viscosity your owner's manual requires. while i pay a little extra for full synthetic oil, i dont believe in the marketing hype out there about the super clean high mileage, seals up internal engine scoring oils out there. religiously change your oil and filter and you will be fine

I have heard you can not switch back from synthetic oil to standard oil. Is this correct?
