5.4 l Triton V8. Just this year, the truck starts hard... The Engine turns just fine, but takes a while to Catch. Fuel Filter has been changed, Spark plugs are just over 1 year old. Air filter has maybe 3000 miles on it. EGR Valve changed when spark plugs were changed. Any Ideas of where else I can check? No Serv Eng Soon light is on and otherwise the truck runs great...

When you say starts hard, do you mean the engine turns over normally for a longer period of time? Or do you mean it turns over really sluggishly? If turns over normally, turn key to the "on" position(dashlights work) and off 3 times. Then see if it starts normally. If it does, the check valve in the fuel pump is leaking off and the fuel system needs primed agan before it will start. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Good point..yes when I say it "starts hard" I mean that the engine turns over normally, but for a longer period of time like it's not firing, or getting fuel... I'll try your suggestion and see what happens... so just out of curiousity... how do prime the fuel system?

Turning the key on and off will pressurize the fuel system. The pump runs for approximately 2 seconds and shuts off each time the key is placed in the on position. So by turning the key to on 3 times, this builds more pressure in the fuel lines and therefore primes the system. After the PCM sees rpm over cranking speed, it turns the pump on constantly. Well, unfortunately... I tried it, and no change... once it's warm, or atleast has been started once that day, it seems to start just fine... I knew it wasn't going to be that easy to find my problem........darn it...

How long has it been since a tune up? If the plugs are worn enough, it could cause the hard starting. Without having hands on the vehicle, guessing is the best we can do. It is possible the crank sensor could cause it, also the ISC, and the coolant temp sensor. There are a lot of things that could cause it, and without having the PID's of the sensors, it is really hard to diagnose this concern. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

the last tune up was approximately 1 year ago, not more than 18 months.. Had a COP problem, found the rotten coil, replaced all spark plugs... since then I've changed the EGR valve, replaced the Air and Fuel Filters. If these sensors were bad, shouldn't the serv eng soon light come on? is there a test with a multi meter that I can perform to test these sensors? Here's to hating bug hunts

Let me check at the shop tomorrow and find the voltages and ohms for the coolant temperature sensor. Could be it is reading a little too warm and not allowing enough fuel. Like the old choke system. A friend of mine sent me this. It has the conversion charts for temperature to volts and ohms. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/sensors.htm Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Thanks a lot... It's probably not that big of a problem, and may not cause many problems down the line, but it's like squeaky brakes.... "Dude, Fix your car..." kind of embarrasing...LOL
