I brought a 2002 hyundai elantra with 134,000 miles beginning of March. Since then I've put 2,000 more miles on it and had the oil change right after I bought it. I had no problems until a trip to MD from NJ, March 31st. It overheated, pretty badly. During the ride back, after putting 2 gallons of coolant in the radiator, we had no interior heat even with the controls turned all the way up. There was no mention of any coolant problems on the inspection report from the oil change and I didn't see any puddles on the ground under my car (I park in the same spot every day). So far, I had the thermostat replaced and for a day I had interior heat and the engine wasn't running hot. Now the gauge climbs hot then drops down to about 1/2. I'm getting the water pump replaced today. And there's still no heat. I have had to put more coolant in since getting the thermostat changed last week so I know there's a leak somewhere but could I also have a blown head gasket since I have no interior heat? This car is my daily driver for now with intentions to get back into a Mustang some time next year but even then I still want to use this car and hopefully get another 70,000 out of it.

First step will be to pressure test the cooling system to look for the coolant loss. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sorry for the late response. Had it pressure tested and it was the head gasket. 3 days ago, I had the head gasket + every gasket in the engine (according to the mechanic), water pump, thermostat and radiator cap all replaced. Yet it still starts running hot after a few miles at 50 mph. What else could it possibly be? The fans are working as they should; there's no visible leaks coming from the radiator or any hoses. I don't know.

Has your mechanic measured the temperatures across the radiator? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No he hasn't. I'm taking it back in a few hours so I'll ask him to do that. The check engine light came on today and its for a catalytic converter. Could a bad cat cause my engine to overheat?

A restriction in the exhaust, such as a plugged converter, could cause the engine to run hotter and possibly overheat. Normally you would notice a huge reduction of power if that were the case. The trouble code (P0420) for the converter usually sets because the converter isn't cleaning the exhaust, but doesn't mean necessary mean it is clogged. The converter may have been damaged from the engine burning coolant also. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'm going to have the convertor checked and most likely replaced. My gut is telling me its probably clogged and has been since before I brought it

The blown head gasket was the resulting damage from a previous overheat. You have not found the original problem that caused the blown head gasket in the first place. I would be highly suspect of the radiator with those symptoms, possibly even the water pump.
