03 crown vic alternator Sign In

Hello I have a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria police package, it is still being used as a police car. The problem is the department has put 8 alternators on it this year. All have been OEM alternators. 7 of them would just quit charging and the 8th one started over charging but only when the RPM's were high, as in if I took off after a car and the RPM's got high the voltage meter would rise. Im trying to figure out if maybe I have to many lights etc hooked up for the alternator to support. maybe a 200amp alt would work better?????

I might try a different battery. You also want to take an amp reading and see just how much current this thing is having to put out at peak. No alternator can handle being stressed to the max for long periods.

i apologize i forgot to put in that we have put 2 batteries in it this year thinking that could have been the problem. the car currently has a 135amp alternator, if we put a 200amp in could it hurt anything?

It won't hurt anything but it may be mounted and wired differently.

As I said before, read the current draw under max load to see how hard this unit is working.
