04 Ford Freestar Limited 4.2 w/AX4N tran. No troubles, but have read horrror stories about trans. in these vans. Owner Maint. Guide calls for fluid change @ 30M miles in vans w/4R100 trans., but makes no mention of the AX4N. Mine was changed @ 30M, and is clean, full, & no burnt smell, but want to avoid any future problems. Has 84M miles now. Any advice? Thanks, Jim Allan, Ford owner since 1955.

You can never go wrong changing the fluid every 30K. Just make sure they use the correct fluid which is Mercon V.

Re: 04 Freestar Limited transmission Sign In

biggest problem with these transmission are the dipstick tube they are a two pice tube. They tend to leak and allow water into the tranny then it's gameover. Get tube resealed if it has never been done at a ford dealership or tranny shop worth the investment. Check your tranny dipstick fequently look for any signs of surface rust on the dip stick thats your first sign of leakage.
