04 Sable won't start ....help! Sign In

I have 2004 Mercury sable that will only start periodically. When I try to start it the theft light flashes but nothing else on the dash board works, none of the gauges work but the lights radio etc. work. Sometimes after sitting for a day or so the will again start. What is the problem and how do I go about fixing it? With the economy right now I don't have the money to take it into a shop and spend another thousand dollars trying to get it repaired as I have already done that and the problem still exists. Please help!

Seems like the antitheft is acting up. Most reset with a remote to "unlock" and allow you to go. If aftermarket follow those instructions. Battery for remote might be low or the cause. If OE - read how this one is supposed to disable and enable,

Thank you for the reply, the problem is that I don't have a remote, so now what do I do?

If an original Mercury system read the owner's manual for help. You might be stuck to go to a dealer to get a remote or find a place that will permanently disarm it and be done with the headaches they cause IMO. Most systems will go nuts if battery is disconnected for any reason or just run down way too low,

Just to add a little more info. that vehicle has 2 factory systems, anti theft passive (PATS) & perimeter.

If in fact it's a PATS prob, which it could be. The easiest thing to do would be try your spare key. These systems use an RF transponder in the key. Those are usually the problem.

If you don't have a spare, then unfortunately you will need to get new keys & have it reprogammed with an IDS or WDS.

Just a word of caution there are a few less common items (PATS module, PCM, related wiring) that could also cause the prob. So getting it diag'd might cost a little more up front but could wind up being cheaper in the long run.
