09 Kia Borrego 4.6L fan clutch? Sign In

Hello,

I have this Kia Borrego which is pretty rare, as is the 4.6L. I believe only this SUV and hyundai's genesis have this engine. The only Kia forum I can find has very little traffic in the Borrego section.

I have an A/C problem atm. On the highway it works pretty well. At idle it blows air barely cooler than outside air.

I believe I've narrowed it down to the fan clutch. I started it up with the engine warm and turned on the A/C and was able to stop the fan with a rolled up Harbor Freight catalog and moderate pressure.

I'm hesitant to just put in a new fan clutch because -- how can the fan clutch be bad, but the engine still stay cool (according to the gauge) even with 100 degree temps in stop/go traffic?

And the next step -- If I'm going to replace the fan clutch should I plan on doing the water pump along with it?

You need to step back a bit here and do a little more homework. There is not a ton of details available for this car but everything I am finding says this has an electric fan.

Here is a picture of the fan relay locations. See if your car has these relays.

I see there is a separate electric fan for the condenser - not sure if that's working properly or not, but there is definitely a clutch operated radiator fan.

You probably need to concentrate on the electric fan if your are having AC problems. That is a 2 speed fan that may have lost low speed. You can change the fan clutch also if you want but that is a fairly large job and I doubt it will help your AC problem.

Owners manual says there is a 30A and 60A relay in the engine compartment "sub fuse panel" for C/FAN LOW and C/FAN HI. I will check on those when I get a chance.

You can check that but it is far more likely to be the resister in the fan itself.

Condenser fan runs, but not very fast.
At operating temp with the AC on - 80 degrees outside I could see the fan running. Couldn't hear it. Didn't sound like it was moving much air.
AC, as always, not doing much cooling.

General on the things: This new later fan clutches are very good at coasting - using no engine power wasted you may just be seeing it just slightly moving. 80F isn't hot for a lot of situations all depends. The idea is grab HARD when air temp coming thru reaches set degrees can even be annoying like starting up from waiting at a stop for any reason and feel it let go.
If it's not doing that it's failing and why is the issue IDK this vehicle or knowingly seen one so can't know details. The idea isn't new at all the performance should be aggressive or why did they bother? It needs it for stead cool air and more important keep the engine cool as well,

Did a visual check on the condenser fan. Engine warm, temp 80 degrees, AC on - the fan is running, but not very fast. The AC was not cooling.

The compressor is pretty noisy. I've thought it was on the way out since I've owned the truck (year and a half), but keeps on ticking.

? Fans simply have to work as intended. If one was slow and other just limp it's wrecking the airflow path, sensors for when to be strong or low get miss information than the poor cold air out vents. Engine isn't as fussy IMO the condenser is a gas under pressure vs liquid - YET.

Noisy compressor isn't a good sign. Is it always or just when not cooling well as it should cool fine if you just do a good water mist on condenser doesn't need a fan at all then.
Pay attention as noisy compressor now it's either working way too hard or lacking lube can happen from low charge.
Said I never saw one of these but in general several would still use a sight glass for charge being right at a raised idle see it go clear but also need to know fans are operational and idle held a bit up over 1,000 should do if it has one. Otherwise pressures timed for when it's not right.
Now you've got compressor worrying me if knocking you need to know why or forget having A/C for a while,
