i just changed the motor in my 70 nova from a 350 to a 454. heres the problem when i try to turn over with the key the starter just hits the fly wheel and makes a clink sound. sometimes if i try 6 or 7 times it will finally engage and start the motor. if i put on my 40 amp charger it will start every time i turn the key. i thought the battery was bad it only had 550 cold cranking amps so bought a new battery with 700 cca. and it did the same thing so i exchanged that new battery for another new one and it does the same thing. i put a meter on battery and it has 13.7 volts. i checked for loose connections at the battery and at the starter and all wires are tight. the starter is also new .can you help im going nuts.

I would do a voltage drop test on all the cables, both negative and positive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Take a digital voltmeter and attach the black lead to the negative battery post and the red lead to the engine block. Have someone hit the starter and read the meter. If it shows anything over half a volt, there is a problem with the cable. Do the same test with the positive side but use the positive terminal of the battery and the main terminal of the starter. You're basically running the meter around the cable you are testing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

ajj: Consider just getting (1) gauge battery cables to a good known and tested battery new or not. Lots of those just loved the greatly lower resistance of of the fatter wires to carry the power much better. Bet the test HT mentioned would show the drop. That's a lot of engine to turn and needs all it can get, T

I would and did when they were new. They plain worked better then. Used to call them 6v cables probably some bucks now if good real copper cables not that junk they sell today. May not be the whole issue but a good improvement, T

AGAIN, find the problem first before disturbing anything. Trust me - that's part of the problem as said if not most of it. Was a huge problem with high compression and a hot engine especially, T
