When I hit the dimmer switch the head lights go off. ( headlights only). Hit them again headlights come back on.

Are you sure you don't have 2 burnt out bulbs? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Single sealed beam bulbs but two filements and yes as HT says can both of same filament can go out. Other would be the floor switch to see if all wet/corroded both switch and plug to it, T

You can't believe how many times people have come to me with this problem and it turned out to be both low beam lights burned out one at a time and nobody noticed until the second one burned out.

So true HT. Any, even now if one known the same age as another goes I do both sides. Possibly still marked how many run hours like household bulbs they are expected to be lit then poof - gone. Gotta check that first at least, T

You won't be doing that on some of these newer cars with HID. The bulb is over $100, the module is about $600, the igniter is about $200 and some of the empty headlamp housings are $2000.
