1984 Oldsmobile Omega 2.8 V6 unknown kilometers, best guess is between 100,000km and 300,000km My problem is that I have recently added oil to my car but the temp light still comes on shortly after I begin driving, if I drive for a few minutes beyond that I can smell a burning smell and there are sometimes faint wisps of smoke coming out from under the hood. Foolishly for a while I did not add any oil to my car despite knowing that it was very low, finally when it became very obvious that I needed to add oil or I would be doing damage to the car(temp light was on and there was a very strong smell of burning combined with light smoke coming from under the hood) I immediately added a quart. As soon as I was able to I also went out and bought some more engine oil and added another two quarts as well over a week or so. The problem is that despite having added oil I am still experiencing the same symptoms from when I knew the oil was very low. I was about to add another quart of oil when I finally checked the dipstick and discovered that there was a lot of oil in the engine already. I do not know how to maintain my car myself so I was about to take it in to a repair shop and get someone else to solve my problem, but I have a few free days where I don't need to drive anywhere very far. I was hoping that I might get some advice here as to what the problem might be and beyond that a solution that I could possibly do myself and save a lot of money. I was also hoping this would be an excellent opportunity to educate myself about maintaining my own vehicle. I will try to check back here frequently over the next few days and I will answer any questions anyone might have to the best of my ability.

You probably have an oil leak that is getting on something hot, such as the exhaust. What is leaking is anyone's guess. I am sure the shop you take it to will be able to determine the source of the leak and give you an estimate for repair. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
