1987 Honda Accord Sign In

My 1987 Honda Accord starts up great and runs good for about 45 minutes (I have an hour drive to work in the morning and afternoon) suddenly it just loses power, like it's running out of gas, if I floor it, it stalls. The only way I can keep it running is if I keep popping the clutch in 2nd gear and then it's just bumping and going about 10 miles an hour. One time it happened when the car overheated but that's the only time that happened. When it won't even run popping the clutch, I pull over - I wait maybe 10 minutes and then it starts up. If I go to lunch at work, the car starts and is fine. Please help - we are very low on money and I need my car.Unsure
Thank you

Re: 1987 Honda Accord Sign In

Argg., We can only guess at what info we have but there are a couple possiblilities.

You may have a fuel pressure problem or an exhaust restiction. Neither will show up while it's running well so you would need to have stuff with you when it acts up.

Both require tools to measure pressures. The possibility of an exhaust restiriction is done with with a vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum with a "T" and the vacuum should be the same at idle as at about 2,000 RPM - if not there's a problem. (That test done with no load on engine)

Post any new observations and I/we will try to get you thru this, Good luck,

Nothing new to report except that my husband talked with someone at the auto parts store and he said it sounds electrical - I've heard Auto Zone will check the electrical system free?????????

My info is that Auto Zone will do a computer scan for free (of course in hopes of selling you the parts but I don't think that's manditory). Any stored codes would help. There may not be any?? That is NOT to say they can find every problem with your car just that they and perhaps others will do the scan too for free or small charge. Any info helps with the fix, good luck,

Re: 1987 Honda Accord Sign In

I am having almost the same problem with my 87 accord. It starts up fine, but once it warms up a little it will, you can't give it gas or it will stall. It sounds like there is something wrong with the vacuum. I recently had the carburetor rebuilt, could this be my problem again? It doesn't stall all the time, just about 4 out of five it does though. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1987 Honda Accord Sign In

See the post of 4-1-2005, by me, then take a good look for all vac and wiring connections - but it sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem. If the carb work fixed it for a while I doubt you need that again.

Some things to try are water removing dry gas (should say isopropyl alcohol on container) and some quality fuel injector cleaner even though you have a carb. If either helps - put in a new fuel filter as it may have caught more junk than is good for it. Hope that helps and fixes it. Post back with results - The info is good for everyone. Good luck, Tom
