1988 chev s10-speedometer is jumpy

1988 chev s10-speedometer is jumpy Sign In

The speedometer sometimes does not work properly--it says I am going way faster than I actually am and is bouncy. When this happens, there is a loud noise coming from the drivers side.

Ayup! Have had those that would drive an in-law, out! I think even in 1988 you can get to the back of the speedo head thru the speaker in the dash. Cable will come out from that end and can be greased with real grease along the length of it and re-installed. It will shut up and should be ok or a new/used speedo head may be needed,

like mentioned above, you need to re-lube your speedo cable. price out a new one, they are usually like 10-15 bucks for that price id just replace it, its quicker lol.

also inspect the speedo gear on the tranny side of the cable for any missing teeth.

also are you running stock size tires? if you altered the size your speedo will run faster or slower depending if you went up or down in size
