1991 Toyota Corolla LE Sign In

Hello everyone, I'm brand new to the forum and can't wait to get some awesome help. I recently bought a 1991 Toyota Corolla LE with 115,000 miles on it and I need some assistance figuring out what I need to fix an issue I'm having with its suspension or at least what I'm assuming is the suspension.

The issue at hand is as follows:
Whenever I hit a bump my car would physically slam which obviously wasn't good and I knew that I had to replace the cut springs that the previous owner had which was completed today with brand new springs all the way around and the cars ride is now very good and all but the same issue is still there when I hit bumps it makes a very harsh slamming noise that I know can't be good and I'm assuming it is that maybe I need new strut cartridges since they have been beaten up so badly from the previous owner destroying the spring which made the struts give out? All parts on the cars suspension are stock except for the springs now which are B&G Sport S2 springs. Basically I'm trying to find what I need to replace to get it to stop slamming on every little bump and I really appreciate you guys taking the time to help people like me who are not car savvy.

So the last owner cut the springs to lower it? Ugh, perfectly good kits with a higher spring rate were on the market to solve that. But you want to do right by it and thats good.

Considering the age, mileage and the high likelihood the last owner drove it hard the struts are likely shot. Also the strut mounts. Get this up in the air and look closely at the bearings, ball joints. tie rod ends, sway bar links and frame bushings. All may be on the way out.

What did you drive before this? I recall driving this model years ago and even in good repair I could feel every crack in the pavement. So if you're used to SUV's or a fullsize car this ride could seem worse to you because you aren't used to it. The older models were what kept me from buying a Japanese car. They did learn and got better, and the 07 Camry in my driveway is night and day to the older suspensions or I wouldn't have bought it. Took a good bit of convincing from the salesman just to get me to test drive the thing as I remembered the older ones and I drive fullsize vehicles.

Re: 1991 Toyota Corolla LE Sign In

My car before this was a 1999 Toyota Corolla that had 250k+ miles that drove like a champ that also had a pretty worn suspension and I had shocks/struts replaced and I was still not impressed since my first car my dads 01' 4.2L S4 lol! But it's not like a normal bump in the road it hits way harder than usual and I think you're right that I just need to check your list and replace what looks broken. I will check it out tomorrow and hopefully the front struts are serviceable so I can just replace the strut cartridges in the front which is a cheap 26$ a pop. Thanks I'll keep everyone updated with my findings and take pictures to help better diagnose the problem(s).
