1993 Ford Explorer starts, idles, and runs great. MPG is normal, but occasionally the check engine will come on for a short period and car will run rough/sputter and die if your at a slow speed. Then problem corrects itself after 5-10 seconds or upon restart then it drives great until the next episode. Check engine light goes off after that 5-10 seconds. It will probably happen 1-2 times over a 25 mile drive. Any initial thoughts before I dig into this?

OK - it's intermittent and should have a code to get. Do you have access to a code reader for this or can you get codes read and post the #s please we can suggest from what it sees. Know it isn't to tell you what to replace or do just which circuit sees a fault, T

Codes while off were 181, 189, 215, 228, 539 Codes while running, take in mind that maf sensor had to be unplugged now to run test otherwise car stalls are 90, 157, 998 Car now won't idle unless maf is unplugged or you pump the gas pedal Now has a new maf and a new fuel filter

181-Fuel system too rich Bank 1 189-Fuel system too rich Band 2 215 -PCM detect primary coil 1 circuit failure 228-Not valid for this vehicle 539-AC on defrost during KOEO I would attack the 215 first and find out what the problem is with that coil. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks. Tested all the plug wires and all were firing. Took it down the road, after it still was sluggish, but would idle with the maf plugged in reran the codes twice and got 412, 538, and 137 both times Did have to pump the gas once or twice during the test to keep it from stalling O2 sensor?

412-Cannot control RPM during KOER high RPM test. 538-Invaled cylinder balance test due to throttle movement 137-Rich Bank 2 The first 2 code just mean you didn't do the test right. As I said earlier, find the coil problem and stop unplugging the sensors.

Sensors we're not unplugged during test. Only thing that was done was car was given a bit of gas on 2 occasions once car was about stall during test. Would that cause test to be done incorrectly? All other directions were followed when prompted. As far as find the coil problem, I tested for spark at each plug wire and got it. What other issues am I looking for with the coil? Thanks again for your help

You have an intermittent misfire and a code for the primary circuit on Coil one so, yes you have a spark problem that is related to the triggering of that coil. That could be caused by the coil itself or the related wiring and needs to be resolved before looking for any other issues and yes touching the throttle during the KOER test will disrupt the test.

Since there was a MAF code, and being a Ford, and that it runs better with the MAF disconnected, I'd attack that first. It's easy to remove and clean. Afterwards, clear the codes, then re-test drive. If the MAF code comes back, you'll probably have to replace it. JMHO. Loren SW Washington

I know he said he unplugged it but I didn't see a MAF code listed.

IDK - I have the real code reader for this and it wrong so much or erratic even when this wasn't that old I dare say the open plug connector can't be trusted for codes well but now every vacuum hose in this thing is suspect or toss them all without breaking connectors! T

Well, found another vacuum leak, changed out plugs/wires/ignition coil. Car idles good and has good power. Only code that was given was 539 and that 538. This time throttle wasn't touched and directions on scanner were followed. Went to inspection place this morning and then check engine flashed. Now getting 539 and 177 when off and 538 and 137. Idle and power are good. AC and Defrost have been off for every test. Erratic rpm movement is gone, idle is smooth. Any ideas of where to look now?

Well, went through emissions and it passed without any problems. Check engine light came on, but they said it didn't matter because car was too old. Still want to stop code from coming on.

You still have an unstable idle and rich mixture on bank 2 so you might lokk for things like a leaky injector.

You may still have a vacuum leak and again I don't trust codes for this scanner for it or not. Try carb spray at intake and throttle body gaskets too if that changes idle it shouldn't. Smoke tests can be better or windy from fan? Other is with what may now be fixed it's just not blown out yet so a good ride and a few hard accelerations from a stop idea is get O2 sensors, cat and engine to work hard might clear out prior yuk and make converter hotter to clear itself. You are getting the erratic readings I fear so blow it out is what I suggest then see what stays if anything, T
