1993 Ford Tempo Brake Line issue

1993 Ford Tempo Brake Line issue Sign In

Hi everyone. My 93 Ford Tempo has a leaky brake line (passenger side rear). It's the hard line that appears to make a fairly long run to the front. The outside diameter of the (steel?) line is about 0.26". My question is: where can I find brake line for this car, and will it require special tools? Any other advice you can give is a plus.

There are two popular brake line sizes for the long stretch and just match it up - 3/16th I think?? You can just buy a pre made long line and cut out the back section to good areas to flare in unions. Takes flaring tool and some finesse and then bleed brakes which may be problem #2 if they don't bleed. Cheap parts to fix this with potential to snowball into a lot of things to bleed it out.

Think about whether you want to do this or send it out. Tools = tubing cutter, flaring tool, unions (proper ones - not compression stuff like home plumbing) and the longest line will have two flare nuts on it for use as the splice in peice.

All those parts might be $40 bucks with cheap flaring tool. Takes some finesse as I said and bleeders that break off or act up may mean replacing wheel cylinders and or calipers as needed and more lines may act up or break trying to replace those.

The replacement line must be in the exact place the original was - can't rub on anything, wiggle around or it will fail.

Hard to know how much tolerance you might have for what is fairly easy when you do these frequently. Again, cheap on parts bigger on experience and some time. They make some much fancer tools to speed this job up and with that good old experience again you can get bleeders to work and lines removed if needed to do this. Then there's the potential to have to dismantle brakes for parts the line goes to so you have to know how to get out of what problems may arise if you start with this.

For most folks - I'd send this out. Also - if the car is generally ok and this is a rusted line there could be other spots waiting to do the same to do in advance,
