I have a 1995 Olds Cutlass Ciera. It's a 3.1L 6cl. After hitting a pothole, the engine died. Now, once it cranks up, it dies immediately unless the accelerator is pressed down. While it will run when the pedal is pressed, it sounds really rough, and the air around it smells of gas fumes. I thought a fuel line may have come loose, but there is no sign of liquid leaking onto the ground. Any thoughts? I don't even know where I should start looking. Thanks!

Gasoline evaporates fast. You need to have the car tow to a shop and inspected on a lift before you have a fire.

Look underneath with a bright light for obvious defects and damage first. Check the power and ground wires and fusible links at the starter for damage, as it sits low enough to possibly have issues were it to get snagged. Repair any damage seen and be sure to get the connections shiny clean and coat them with dielectric grease when you tighten them back down to keep them from corroding again right away.

If this doesn't help, some more testing is certainly needed. A fuel pressure reading would be a good thing. Check the ECM for any current codes and post the exact code numbers for us, not the generic descriptions.

Was the exhaust damaged at all?

Looking underneath, I don't see any damage to the exhaust. I do, however, notice that the wires in the harness appear to have been beaten all to hell, with the rubber completely gone in some places. Not sure if that would cause the problems that I'm seeing, but I'm certain that it doesn't help.

Missing insulation on your wiring is a BIG issue. First, any power wire that can contact metal will short and blow fuses or possibly fry some wires. Also it exposes the wiring to moisture, corroding it inside the wire and making all sorts of electrical trouble.
