1995 Saturn SL Running Problem

Hello everyone, I own a 1995 Saturn SL with a 4 cyl, 1.9 L SO engine and over 130K miles. A few days before I began experiencing my problem, I could smell a strange burning smell outside the vehicle. I thought it may have been a different vehicle parked nearby until I smelled it again while picking up a pizza a few days later. I drove through the parking lot just fine and came to a stop before pulling out onto the road. When I pushed the gas the car wouldn't budge. I put it in reverse and it backed up just fine. When I put it in drive the engine would rev, but it wouldn't go. I ended up parking it and had my dad come and take a look. When he tried it the engine would rev and after a couple of seconds it would drive forward. Since I was a short distance from home he had me drive it while he followed from behind. While I was driving the speedometer's needle was freaking out and there was a constant ticking noise (like every second or so). Every time it made the noise my headlights would dim. Every time I stopped it would hesitate before driving again. I also remember having to push the pedal down farther than usual to get it to go. About a block or so from the house the ticking stopped and everything started to act normal again. I haven't driven it since. The only problem I had before this was when my engine fan wouldn't turn on unless I had the A/C running. After turning the A/C off the engine fan would continue running for a minute or so before shutting off. I didn't have time to get that looked at and am not sure if that could be related? My dad believes it could be an electrical problem but we aren't sure. Wanted to see what you all thought before we took it in, just in case it could be something we could fix.
