1995 skylark; wiper arm to transmission drive

1995 Skylark.
Heavy snow yesterday and the wipers were engaged before clearing the snow. One of the wiper arms 'sheared'. The wiper transmission shaft, where the wiper arm attaches with a nut, has a cone shape with ridges that meshes with the wiper arm assembly. It looks like it was damaged. It's pretty smooth now. The arm easily was moved back and forth before disassembly.
Question is does this cone get bitten into with a new wiper assembly or are these ridges part of the system that takes the torque, or to put it another way, if I get a new wiper assembly and screw it down tight, with the fresh ridges in the part bit into the transmission hub and secure the wiper?
In trying to avoid replacing the whole transmission, is there a trick to secure this arm to the transmission hub?

Your wiper transmission is permanently damaged now. It sounds like either it was ice frozen when turned on or the attaching nut was left loose.
Both the wiper arm and the transmission shaft have those splines to prevent it from moving once attached so both the transmission and the wiper arm will have to be replaced now and be careful when turning them on in the future.

Unsure of exact type used, one GM way the part to arm was keyed = only goes on one way/position. Look as you can see if cowl comes off nuts and bolts you probably wrecked something - find where and bet used is the choice?
IDK if these wipers lift up straight if expecting ice/snow some do, some don't. I know you know thing is NEVER leave wipers on anyway when shutting off a car, T

I found a used transmission. All looks good. And I purchased a new wiper arm.
This wiper arm looks good in all respects except I have one question. The end of the arm that goes over the transmission grooved attachment point, is tapered, as expected, but it is smooth. Shouldn't it have a mating pattern to mesh with the attachment 'peg'. Or, maybe, does the transmission bite into this smooth metal (might even be plastic can't tell) and lock on that way.
In other words, before I ruin it, do I have the right wiper arm?

I would have expected it to be ribbed also but i don't know for sure. Is the arm OEM?

That could be the reason. They tend to cut corners. You would probably do better with a used one but I still don't know if it's supposed to have splines.

Saw one "Dorman/Mighty" new wasn't splined? OK so it's meant to work like a frond end part?
Fits a lot of cars keeps saying right side - not the point. If like that new I guess it's meant to be put it on with nut in known "parked" position" = OFF this or others you can force it to not touch windshield a small #1 screwdriver or a nail watch it work before it beats up itself if wrong.
IDK about the no splines if both surfaces trans gear/shaft and new arm?
Warning on this: If like it seems it doesn't stand straight up so if hood open will trash itself if not down?
THIS CRAP CAN RUIN A WHOLE DAY WITH THE RIGHT PARTS bend up again it's not a brilliant era for silly stuff like this in designs.
BTW found new stuff on eBay thru an image search if only for images of what this is like - stinks,

Update. I dropped $60 to get a new xmission and blade; turns out I didn't have to. The mess of ground up metal I found wasn't so bad. I cleaned of the xmissiion and old blade mounting areas and found that the metal shavings came from the blade. I guess it's the softer metal. Bushing off the xmission mount I found the ridges in ok shape.
I took a small hammer and pounded the blade down hoping that it would help the xmission bite into the blade and also screwed it down hard. Seems to have worked.
The smoothness of the new blade connection area is correct I think.
I noted that the old blade only had grove markings on one side of the seating area. I think it was not originally fully seated. Did last 25 years thou!
