1996 Subaru Won't Start Each Time

I drive a 1996 Subaru Legacy. She's at 171,000 miles, engine size 2.2L. Several months ago I started having trouble starting it from time to time (not sure why this trouble came about) so I had the spark plugs and starter replaced. When this didn't fix the problem I had the battery replaced shortly after in September 2012. The problem is progressively getting worse. When I turn the key to "on" I hear the usual beeps and my dash lights come on but then when I turn to crank it, nothing. Not even a sound. This doesn't happen every time but its happening more and more often, unpredictably. Getting a jump works. Connecting a jump box to the battery and tapping the starter while someone cranks works. One time letting the car sit for 2 days worked! Other than this starting issue, I have not had any problems with the battery like it dying while Im driving. Ive taken the car in to a couple different auto shops to get tests done. Some say its the battery some say the starter. Im hoping to get some advice before I continue putting money into fixing the wrong parts. Thank you!

If you tap on the starter without connecting anything to the battery when it doesn't want to start, will the engine crank? If someone holds the key in the start position when it doesn't want to crank and you tap on the starter and the starter takes off, that means the starter is the culprit. It was the starter! Thank you for your help! I had the starter replaced again at the shop and she's starting like a champ now! Thanks again!
