1996 regal brake lights not functioning
|
|
|
1996 Buick Regal 3.8 litre 196000 kilometers My mom's 1996 Regal's brake lights are not working. The fuse is good, there is power to the switch at the brake pedal, the 4 ways and signal lights all work fine. Is there something that I am missing, perhaps a relay? Thanks, Paul

That's a funky looking stoplight switch! Power needs be there AND when pressed the continuity passed on to lights of course. Funky as said and it may partially work if car shifts ok out of park. Hope pic shows. It was just $9.99US at one parts outlet so might be worth a try. Definitely if you see burnt or heated plastic on the thing. Appears adjustment is required - hard to see in the pic, Hope is shows. By the count of terminals I'd bet one set for main lights, one set for shifting, one for the third brake light?? T

To add, it does need adjustment when putting it it. You screw it in and check that when the brake pedal is up it depresses the switch but doesn't contact the body of the switch, otherwise it will bang into it and crack it when you let off the brake. Cheap and easy part to replace.

Does the 3rd (high mount) brake light work? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

It's important because if the high mount is working, that would mean a bad turn signal (combination) switch ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes, the rear brake light (high one) is working, and the left regular brake lights work when the left turn signal is on, (without the ignition on) Does this mean I need to replace the turn signal switch in the steering column?

Yes, you do. It's a combination multifunction switch. They go a lot.
