I have been having a problem with the heating in the cab of my truck. I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota, with 5.2L V-8 and 126000 miles. I recently purchased the truck so I'm not sure what led up to this problem but I have been trying to troubleshoot it without any success. What I have done is recently flush the coolant system to see if maybe the heater core might have been plugged. This was not the case since the problem continues. I did notice something after I flushed the coolant system. When I turn off the blower in the cab, the inlet and discharge hoses to the heater core are both hot, but when I turn the heat on in the cab, I get an initial burst of heat, and then the air cools down. What I noticed with the hoses is that the inlet hose stays hot to the heater core, but the discharge hose goes cold. What would be causing this? I don't have any problems with the engine overheating so I assume the water pump is fine and I would think that the heater core is fine since there must be flow through it if the inlet and discharge hoses are hot when I don't have the fan on in the cab.

All that points to a plugged up heater core. You will likely have to replace it.
