1998 Ford Explorer Won't Start
|
|
|
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer, automatic, V6. The transmission was rebuilt a couple of years ago but it won't start. The gearshift is acting like it is stripped. I can turn the key and have all lights etc, just won't start or go into any gear. Is there a piece that connects the gearshift to the transmission from the steering?

When you state it won't start, do you mean it won't crank? What do you mean by the gear shifter being stripped? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The engine does not turn over at all. I can move the gear shift but it feels like it is not catching any of the gears, it does not matter if I go slow or fast.I can move it back and forth and the gears I can feel but nothing happens

Will the vehicle move if you push it? I'm not being a smart ass, just wondering if it is out of park at the transmission. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Actually, I do not know for sure. I just had it towed on a flatbed back to my house until I could figure out what to do. I can check tomorrow if you think it will help. It was hard to put in park before today though if that helps.

Well, you might want to go outside and block the wheels just in case. That way you don't get a rude awakening from your neighbor across the street because your Explorer decided to roll across the road and into his/her's living room. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Okay, thanks. I did do that when we brought it back here, I also put on the emergency brake and parked it on level ground. I will let you know if it moves when pushed tomorrow. I appreciate any and all assistance. I have a disabled Aunt, a disabled sister and her 6 kids plus I go to school full time. This car is important.

Thank you for everyone who tried to assist me last week. I now know that the car needs a new shifter cable. I should be back on the road in no time.

That would explain it. Good for you for using parking brake all the time even on level ground. Yes - certain failures a vehicle can roll right away if only held by trans "park" position which is the transmission hold it vs a brake holding it. I'll lock this thread as solved to keep spammers out. You can ask any moderator to reopen it if you wish, T
