Hello,
We have a 1998 Honda Accord with over 300,000 miles.
It actually runs pretty well considering, but...
the car constantly needed oil and coolant.
About a month ago, it wouldn't start, so we took it in, and they replaced the spark plugs, and so that was fixed.
Then, 2 weeks ago, the car started overheating, so we took it in, and apparently the radiator hoses had leaks so they replaced the heater hose and the upper radiator hose and also the air intake boot, and did a compression test.
Before we had them work on the overheating issue, we asked about whether it was worth putting money into this car because of how many miles it had, etc., and whether they were confident that the rest of the car was in good shape. They said yeah, the car seemed good. The charge for the hoses was $425.
Soon after we got the car back, 2 days and 50 miles later, it started overheating again. We took it back in, and they apparently did a leak down test, and they now said that the engine was "drinking" coolant, leaking in spark plugs 1 and 4, exchanging coolant for combustion, and not worth fixing.
So we essentially spent $425 for nothing.
Thanks for any help or advice.

It doesn't take a genius to know you shouldn't be putting money into a 300K car. Of course he will say it's worth doing. He wants the job.
