1998 Mercury Mystique Wont Start Sign In

Hello, I have a 1998 Mercury Mystique GS with 107k miles. I left the lights on when I was at work, and the battery died out and I could not start it. When I jumped it, I noticed a blinking red light on my dashboard and relays in the car clicking. When I turned the key, I would get a humming noise, but the car would not turn over. I think it is an anti theft feature on the car. I had my friend who is a mechanic come to it the next day, and he jumped it and managed to get it to start after fiddling with it. On the drive home, I noticed that the car would bog down at low rpm, and sort of backfire when I gave it some gas. I parked at my home and the next day I tried to start it, nothing would happen. I know that the security system installed in the car is after-market, and it may be messing with it. If you need any more questions or details, let me know, I can also take pictures.

Take the battery out and have it tested. Clean the battery connections. If the connections are rotted out, you'll probably need new battery cables.

Once all that is good and the vehicle is running again, check the charging system voltage at the battery terminals. Should be somewhere around 13.5-14.5 volts at idle.

I tried to replace the battery with a spare I had, but the car still will not turn over, even though the relays stop clicking in the passenger seat. I think it is just a computer issue, but I have disconnected the battery in an attempt to reset it, but nothing seems to work. I got it started today, but after disconnecting it from the jumper, it died within seconds.

Was the spare battery any good? It has to be the same CCA as the one the vehicle calls for. You can't start it off a lawn mower battery.

Have your battery tested to be sure it is good. Then make sure it is fully charged. Like before, make sure your battery connections are clean, not eroded, and tight. Get the engine running and then test your charging system voltage with a volt meter.

You have to have a good fully charged battery before you can test the charging system. The relays are clicking because there is a low voltage condition.
