1998 Volvo S40 cylinder head gasket question Sign In

Hi, I'm new to this site and and live in England. I'm interested in buying a '98 Volvo S40 very cheaply from one of my dads friends. It's a 1.9TD SE model. I'm told that it needs a new cylinder head gasket to be able to run again. Would the car be a wise buy? bearing in mind he only wants £160 for it to make space on his driveway. The owner has had one quote for the repair of approx. £500, but I'm sure I could get it fixed for less if I shopped around.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advanced, Jon-Paul

Do some checking on valuations locally as if the car didn't need anything at all from a dealer just for the info.

Is this "quote" for the repair a firm price or somebody's guess? Sounds cheap for that job.

There's risk in used vehicles anyway so I suggest having this one professionally checked out first with an estimate of what it will take to make it legal and up to your expectations.

Free isn't always a bargain with cars! Costs to put in shape can outdo overall value quickly so do check,
