1998 civic has rapid acceleration.

My Honda accelerated with foot off of gas.I turned it off and back on and it accelerated full throttle all by itself.I had it in park by it reved up without me touching the gas.

Corrie; It could be something very simple, as a vacuum leak, but you should have it checked out. Not sure if the '98 uses a throttle cable or if it's fly by wire. The IAC (idle air control) or EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) could be stuck open. Is the check engine light on? Should be. You 'could' remove the negative battery cable for at least 15 minutes to clear KAM (keep alive memory), but you'll need to do a computer 'relearn' which will require a drive of around 20 miles at varying speeds. The engine/trans. may not respond 'as normal' during this period. I would recommend that you have a qualified technician diagnose this problem, if possible. Loren SW Washington
