1999 Chevy S-10 Pickup, Auto/Trans., 4-cylinder. I've had it approx. 2 1/2 yrs. w/o any major problems. Although, recently when I start it of a morning to go to work, it'll usually do fine. But, by the time I drive about 13 blocks to the store, kill it, come back out to start it up to go on to work, it does absolutely nothing. The radio works, lights work etc...I can usually continue flipping the key back and forth continuously, & eventually it will start. BTW, I took it to Auto Zone to have them run their test & was told that if the Check Engine Soon light isn't coming on, then their test wouldn't tell us anything. My CES light IS NOT coming on. PLEASE, can someone help me to get to the bottom of this annoying & embarrassing dilemma? Thank You In Advance, Ressah

Check the wiring connections at the starter as an easy beginning. Then as you said messing with the key seems to make a difference I would be thinking about a new ignition switch. Good Luck,

I'm just curious, when the problem happens, do the dash-lites come on? Also when it happens, have you tried cranking with the tranny in neutral? I believe your vehicle has starter relay in the power distribution center, doesn't it? You may be able to crank it there, using a jumper-wire on the proper terminals. You need a wiring diagram for that, plus you would be bypassing any safety features. Make sure the tranny is in park and the e-brake is set. Use your best judgement, don't try anything your not comfortable with. Have you tried the headlite test, when the problem is ongoing? Turn the key to start and have someone watch the headlites, if they stay bright, no reaction, then it sounds like an open circuit, could be ignition switch or safety switch, something like that. Make sure all you cables are clean.

I might suggest a fused jumper wire to starter solonoid's start wire to further diagnose. If you don't know just what you are doing STOP! You could start the veh in any gear this way and should use all caution. Prior post suggested similar. It would prove that the starter and solonoid is NOT the problem. Like the prior post try using N (Neutral) and wiggle shifter toward R and D but be in a safe spot with brakes all on in case it starts in gear - be ready to shut it down. If that makes any difference the neutral safety switch could be out of adjustment or bad. Good luck, use common safety sense,

this sounds like the likely culprit starter windings get old work well when the starter is cold but when they heat up they stop working its a common problem with ford f150 starters sounds like ya problem the starter test could well conferm this be careful
